Effect of shade and nitrogen on herb yield and longevity of patchouli (Pogostemon cablin)

A view of improved agrotechnologies for the production of patchouli Pogostemon cablin, (Lamiaceae) has been provided. Patchouli grew taller and greener with more leaf area in 50 and 15 percent shade but had higher moisture content in it than in open. Across treatments, N, P, K contents and uptake averaged 1.422, 0.248, 1.778 percent and 28.8, 5.03 35.5 kg/ha, respectively. Essential oil yields and oil content in the three shade levels were similar. Patchouli responded up to 200 kg N/ha application suggesting that liberal N applications are crucial for high herb and oil production. Thus, apparently patchouli can be grown either in shade as intercrop in plantations or in open field conditions as a short term crop in an existing cropping system.
