Source : NABARD ************** Psyllium (Plantago ovata), its conservation and utilization Isabgol Plantago ovata (Plantaginaceae) is a major medicinal plant of India. The seeds of isabgol are very beneficial in chronic amoebic dysentery and chronic diarrhea. India continues to hold monopoly in its production and teade in the world market. The annual export of husk and seeds are to a tune of Rs.19993.8 Lakhs and Rs.746.8 Lakhs, respectively. Therefore the collection and conservation of the genetic diversity of the wild and cultivated Plantago species are very essential and important for the future use. A brief review on its cultivation, conservation, chemical composition, pharmacopocial standards, adultrants, utilization and therapeutic uses etc, has been provided.
