Directory of Manufacturers of Indian Systems of Medicine
& Homeopathy Drugs ISM & H
An attempt has been made to bring out a directory
of manufacturers of Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy
systems of medicines located all over India who are
licenced by the state drug authorities and/or otherwise
engaged in the manufacture of ISM & H related
drugs. We obtained a list of drug manufacturers from
various State Drug Controllers. The manufacturers
listed therein were reached through post or in person.
Some of them were not found at their given address,
having closed shop or shifted to other premises. Some
of the manufacturers who were approached by post,
their addresses not being in order, the letters sent
to them were received back. Names of such units have
been deleted from the list provided to us by the drug
controllers. It is likely that names of some of the
manufacturers may not have figured in our directory
for these reasons.However, we will appreciate if the
users/readers of the directory may point this out
to us so that we may incorporate their names in our
next edition, as and when published.Thus, in spite
of having received list of over 8500 drug manufacturers,
in reality we found that addresses that are existing
and in operation are somewhat less. Further, during
the course of this exercise, we came across number
of manufacturers who have either applied for licence
or operating without the same. Names of such manufacturers,
which have come to our attention, have been provided
in the supplementary list in this directory.
Institute of Economic and Market Research will be
updating the list of manufacturers from time to time
and providing ISM & H fraternity with its latest
editions to benefit the users and to keep them abreast
of the changes taking place in the ISMH sector. It
is, therefore, of importance that readers, manufacturers,
and their associations provide us with (i) names and
addresses of all units that are functioning in this
sub-sector and not listed in this Directory with such
details of each unit as be readily available; (ii)
provide us with further details about the existing
units so that same are added in our directory, specially
the E-mail addresses which are important for foreign
buyers, and (iii) provide us with their future plans
and any other information on the sub-sector of ISM
& H which will be of interest to our readers.
The present Directory, apart from introduction has
3 lists. Main list is largely based on information
provided by State Drug Controllers. An additional
list is prepared through a survey largely covering
organizations not listed with Drugs Controllers. A
supplementary list covers such units which came to
our attention as the Directory was going to the press.
Inspite of all precautions there may be some commissions
and some errors of commission. While we will attempt
to improve the contents and make corrections in the
subsequent issues, Institute takes no responsibility
for any error of commission or commission that may
have escaped our attention.
IEMR is also in the process of publishing a comprehensive
report on the status, market potential and availability
of selected medicinal plants. This may cover market
structure and dynamics, distribution channels, major
procurement centres, major marketing centres, storage,
packing, processing and preservation, quality of plants
collected from wild and cultivated, demand esti.mates
for different medicinal plants, supply estimates and
their availability from wild and cultivated sources
and imports and exports. This publication may also
cover plant-wise details indicating botanical identification,
areas of occurrence, parts used, processing for medicinal
use, chemical analysis, action and use, compound preparations,
propagation and cultivation, shelf life, substitutes,
adulterants, contamination and similar other aspects
as are necessary for the manufacturers to know about
each herb. A short directory of other important players
in this area such as Testing Laboratories, major Gardens,
major Marketing Centres, organizations engaged in
procurement and sale of herbs, major exporters and
importers, major R & D units, and leading practitioners
will also be included. If you or your organization
have an interest in any of these areas and wish your
name and activities to be projected, please inform
urgently. This publication is planned for early 2003.

and encouragement in our endeavour to complete this
proposed publication.
